How safe is Barcelona for tourists?

Introduction

Barcelona is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. It attracts millions of visitors each year and has an excellent reputation for being safe and secure.

However, even with such a good reputation, pickpocketing has become very common in Barcelona, and there are areas where you should be more cautious than others when visiting Barcelona.

In this article, I will cover some common safety concerns for tourists in Barcelona as well as what precautions you can take in order to feel safe during your trip here.

Violent crime against tourists is very low in Barcelona.

According to the Catalan Police “Violent crimes are rare.” The city mayor also states that most crimes can be attributed to alcohol or drug abuse and that the perpetrators are usually locals who know each other.

It adds that most violent crime takes place between midnight and 5am, with victims usually being men under 35 years old. There have been reports of sexual assaults on women walking alone at night on Avenida Diagonal and in L’ Eixample but these appear to be isolated incidents and not part of an ongoing pattern or trend.

Pickpockets rule the streets.

While Barcelona is generally a very safe city, pickpockets are abundant. On busy streets as Las Ramblas or on the metro, they have become —and they often work in groups.

Pickpockets are highly skilled and organized; they target people with bags, expensive jewelry, and watches, especially tourists. To avoid being robbed, keep your money hidden in your clothes or inside your purse, and don’t carry any valuables such as expensive jewelry or watches with you.

Be careful on the metro, especially if you have luggage.

While the metro is generally safe and clean, there have been many
reported incidents of pickpocketing. It’s best to be on your guard, especially if you have a lot of bags or valuables with you.

Barcelona is generally safe for tourists but there are places where you need to be cautious.

Barcelona is generally a safe city for tourists but as in every touristic city the most common types of crime are petty theft and pickpocketing, but these can be avoided by taking some simple precautions as certain people are targeted.

Do not show of your expensive jewelry or watches,
don´t show of your cash or do not walk very drunk in the streets of the city, and you should be fine.

Avoid tourist scams: Watch out for people offering cheap tours or tickets to clubs and bars; these are usually overpriced and involve rip-offs.

Also be wary of people who ask you to take photos of them or offer you free gifts, as they may then ask for money to pay for the gift—and even demand more if you refuse!

Conclusion

Barcelona in 2022 is still an amazing charming city with great people and a city that’s safe for tourists, but you need to keep your wits about you and be careful. You can avoid most problems just by being cautions. It is always recommended to not carry all your cash in one place, keep your credit cards with you at all times, make sure your luggage is not too heavy before going on public transportation and keep an eye out for suspicious behavior.
