Discover the Cuitadella Park, Barcelona
Park de la Ciutadella. 1714 was the year that the Spanisch invaded Catalunya and took power. In 1715 The Spanish destroyed a big part of the old city center to built a star-shaped military fort. This is the place and seize of where the park is situated. The fort was destroyed 73 years later when the Spanish did not need it anymore to keep power. It is said that the fort was leveled with the ground in just 3 days as the Catalans could not be fast enough to erase those bad memories out of their beautiful city.
With the fort being destroyed the Catalans made a good decision not to rebuilt that part of the city but to make it the city park.
The Park de la Ciutadella is very idyllic and probably the greenest oasis in the megacity of Barcelona. It is a great place to relax, to do a siesta, do a picnic, to do sports, to ping pong, to play music, to watch people and so on. There is also a lake where you rent a rowing boat. On the grounds of the Parc de la Ciutadella, there is also the Zoo and the Catalan Parliament
In 1888 the park was used for the first world exposition in Spain in 1888. The theme of the world expo was metal and electricity. As an introduction to the expo they have build the Arc de Triumph. Located on that same boulevard you will find the first electricity lamp posts ever in the city. The castle you see in the park was the restaurant for the visitors of the exposition.
